Ultimate DIY garden edging that will last forever
In this video, I demonstrate how to build a block wall that acts as garden bed edging using basic tools and readily available materials.
This process will work for any concrete blocks and some stone block walls. If you're looking for garden edging ideas, you definitely want to check this out.
The blocks I'm using in this video are the Rumblestone series by Pavestone. These are available at most big box home improvement stores.

Building a stone or block wall around your garden is a great way to add curb appeal to your home, divide your landscape, and create effective borders or edging.
However, most homeowners make mistakes when using blocks for garden bed edging.
In this video, I walk you step-by-step through this process so you can build a garden retaining wall that looks great and lasts a lifetime without warping or tipping over.
The process I demonstrate is best used for concrete landscaping blocks but can also be used for brick as well.
You can use this process to build a retaining wall-raised garden bed or just for garden bed edging even when not retaining soil. You can build this wall up to three feet tall.
First, you start off with a four-inch layer of packed gravel for a base. Make sure that it is perfectly level because that is the foundation of your garden wall.
Then, begin laying the blocks on the first row and leveling each as you go. This is a time-consuming process, but it's important so slow.
Once the first layer of concrete stone blocks is installed, the rest of the project is easy. Add the second layer, making sure to stagger the seams. Once you have the second layer fit, remove it and apply construction adhesive to secure the blocks together.
Then, repeat this process for as high as you want. Installing a level string tied between two stakes is a great way to help you dig to the appropriate depth, maintain a straight wall, and guide other aspects of the project.
To cut the stone, use a hammer and a mason chisel, as I demonstrate in the video.

Great video. Getting ready to do this. However on a concrete slab so drain situation a bit different. One note I learned in my research. Some manufacturers void warranty if you drill through flange. I get if done correctly not an issue. But id be weary doing it in cheaper acrylic tubs. Fender washer and screw above. But this video helped huge with stud removal. Thanks

I should have listened to all the commenters on these ez mender videos. First one i tried, split the concrete, with 1/2 split through whole thing. Its beyond me, how this steel chisel, that is about 1/3 of an inch wider than the square opening, can NOT crack it.

The narrator is explaining the positioning of the diagonal brace correctly; the guy building the gate installed it the opposite. This is illustrative of how construction contracts sometimes go; the PM tells the contractor one thing and the contracted builder thinks he's interpreted it correctly and/or thinks he knows better and does it his way.

BTW, my mom has a 2 story house and the eaves needed a paint job (plus clean, scrape/sand..), is hiring a handyman enough or is the 2nd story eave not something a handyman will do. I am afraid it may not work for me. I have to go get the masonry bit. I am hoping for the best since my holes are fairly small. The house former owner never secured these things, and they are a hazard. Thanks for the instructions!

Well now i understand why installing baseboards in my 120yr old house last weekend was a nightmare. There is no baseplate stud. Pretty sure the closest equivalent is the old heart pine floor. Ended up having to screw it into the door frame on one end. I think i did hit one stud, but this run was only going a few feet from a door frame to just behind a radiator. So there was probably only 1 stud since mine 18in apart at best.

Look at any garden stone wall in your area and you will see the same thing over and over-- the stones are uneven and sinking. It's because no one respects how much **YOU HAVE** to dig down and put the crushed stone as the base!!! It's extra work, it's extra cost, and it seems so unnecessary when you're placing the stones. But they will all sink if you don't do that step. Take the time. Do it right. This is a great video!

I don't get it. In the beginning of the video, around 1:10, he says "Sealing your grout does not make it waterproof". Then, around 1:30-1:35, he says "... you can't just seal the grout to seal the shower." Uh-oh. I thought that's what we were doing. If water goes through the grout and into the mortar and the porous backside of the tiles, that can't be good. But the rest of the video is filled with comments about making the grout waterproof. For example, at about 3:40 "[The sealer] will penetrate into the pores and harden, and nothing else will get into it." At about 8:15, "Test it by putting a drop of water on [the newly sealed grout] and see if it absorbs into the grout, and if it does, you need to put on more sealer." In other words, the sealed grout is supposed to be waterproof. So which is it? Is sealed grout supposed to keep water out of my tiled shower wall? Or not?
